The Hobbit’s Prayer

The past two days this site has previewed the Eastern and Western Conferences of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Today’s post is a little less objective. Tonight the New York Rangers begin their first round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. A recent tradition has been to recite an iteration of “The Lundqvist’s Prayer“, first posted by user name Saucy Mitts on a New York Rangers fan site, and brought to my attention by my colleague and friend, Sebastian Edmond while we attended school at Oswego State. After last year’s loss in the Conference Finals to Tampa Bay, in which the Rangers were shutout in their final two home games, I realized that the King of Sweden needs no divine incantations to allow him to win the cup; his teammates do. And so, the debut this year’s prayer for the Rangers to win the 2016 Stanley Cup is in honor of perhaps their most consistent forward, Mats Zuccarello.

The Hobbit’s Prayer

Our Hobbit

Who art from Norway

Epic be thy game

In Pittsburgh you’ve won

Crosby is done, earlier than it should be

Give us this day a hat trick

And forgive Girardi and Staal’s turnovers

As fans forgive Lundqvist for letting one in

And lead us not into consternation

But deliver us the Cup
